Assessing students across the country is just a core for many CBSE school across the nation. CBSE did a proof of assessment and found out that only 31.57 % of schools are following the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation in letter and spirit.
CBSE asked aprrox 5000 random school to show the evidence of assessments they made for the first term of 2012- 13 sessions. After going through the assessment it was found out by the board that most of the school had turned the formative assessment in to just another test.
Only 31.57 % of schools were categorized as good and early half of the schools were rated average in performance in CCE. A feedback was provided to the schools and 18.28% of schools were asked to improve their existing practice.
The areas of improvement are formative assessment (FA) and co- scholastic assessment. FA is consided as just another by many schools, which is wrong.
CCE was introduced in CBSE in 2009 to access assess students not just via written tests but by also taking into account their skills in co- scholastic areas and even life. It was introduced in class IX and X while doing away with compulsory board exams. Students will be evulated throughout the year instead of year end exams.
However CBSE found that ‘“the level of these tasks was found challenging in only 14.28 per cent schools but average in 72.57 per cent schools” Students did project work in 57.02 per cent of the schools. It was found that only 8.5% of the school did project work. And 30 per cent conducted insufficient lab activities for their students,” the report compiled by the Board said.
Two FAs are conducted in first term and one FA in second term. All these three FA are of 10 marks each. The fourth FA is turned in to Problem- Solving Assessment — a multiplechoice test set by CBSE. The weightage of FAs is 205 in each term, Summative Assessment — the actual test — carried 30 per cent weightage.
