Grading System

The Ministry of Education has come up with the novel idea of introducing grading system in place of the existing system of marks-based assessment. In other words, instead of marks, students would be given grades as per their performance throughout the academic calendar. This would be done with the help of several formative and summative assessments throughout the year. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced the implementation of the grading system in secondary school examination from the year 2010 itself. Subsequently, this system would be implemented in other classes too. It goes without saying that the introduction of grading system in India has happened after much thought. Its aim is to ease the pressure on children and make studies an enjoyable experience for them. In the prevailing system of marks and percentage-based assessment, children are often trapped in the rat race of achieving the highest marks. This takes out the joy of studies and children start viewing exams as a sort of yardstick on which their intelligence would be judged. The fear of not being able to perform well always looms large over their minds. With the introduction of the grading system, all this would come to an end. Children would now be able to concentrate on studies with the sole aim of gaining knowledge and not only for the purpose of scoring well in exams. The grading system will put an end to the unhealthy competition among students for every extra mark. Now, scoring well in school subjects would not be enough as students would also be tested on several other parameters. The grading system will surely improve the standard of education at school level and make learning more enjoyable.

Patriotism and the Young

READING COMPREHENSION

Those Winter Sundays
Robert Hayden
Sundays too my father got up early
and put his clothes on in the blueback cold,
then with cracked hands that ached
from labor in the weekday weather made
banked fires blaze. No one ever thanked him.
I’d wake and hear the cold splintering, breaking.
When the rooms were warm, he’d call,
and slowly I would rise and dress,
fearing the chronic angers of that house,
Speaking indifferently to him,
who had driven out the cold
and polished my good shoes as well.
What did I know, what did I know
of love’s austere and lonely offices?

Q 1: The word ‘too’ in the first line of the poem suggests
A. continuity of action
B. change of circumstances
C. brevity of existence
D. freezing of good fortune

Q 2: What is the tone of the poet in the last two lines?
A. Approbatory
B. Rueful
C. Remonstrative
D. Audacious

Q 3: Which of the following statements gives the theme of this poem?
A. One gets disillusioned as one gets older.
B. As a child, one always believes in unconditional love.
C. One appreciates paternal love only in hindsight.
D. It is difficult to come to terms with the fact that one has grown up.

Q 4: ‘Chronic’ suggests something that is
A. long-lasting
B. well-considered
C. hurried
D. unjustifiable

Q 5: The poet’s father’s actions indicate that
A. good intentions are often misunderstood
B. love expresses itself even without words
C. faith in one’s loved ones is equivalent to faith in god
D. life’s failures can be overcome with the aid of one’s family

Q 6: The indifference of the son can be equated with
A. the harshness of the cold
B. his father’s warm and loving actions
C. his recollection of the times gone by
D. the overcoming of the cold by the blazing fire

Q 7: The line, ‘who had driven out the cold’ is indicative of the father’s
A. discomfort
B. triumph
C. self belief
D. humility

Solution
1. (A)
‘Too’ in the first line of the poem suggests that like other days, on Sundays too, the poet’s father
gets up early in the morning to make life more comfortable for his son.
2. (B)
The poet’s tone in the last two lines is rueful as he is filled with immense sorrow and grief on
remembering how he ignored his father’s love for him.
3. (C)
The poet understands the worth of his father and his father’s unconditional love only at a later
stage in life when his father is no more with him.
4. (A) Long-lasting
5. (B)
The poet’s father did everything for his son, like warming the house, polishing his shoes etc.
However, he never said a word about doing these things. This shows that love expresses itself
even without words.
6. (A)
Cold freezes the body, while harshness and rude words freeze the heart of a person. Therefore,
the indifference of the son can be equated with the harshness of the cold.
7. (B)
It was a triumph for the father to drive out the cold as he had made the place warmer and more
comfortable for his son.

Poverty and Unemployment

Good morning everyone! Today we have gathered to throw some light on the
burning topic of ‘Poverty and Unemployment’.
Poverty and unemployment are two mutually exclusive yet co-related factors that
have had a profound effect on India’s growth. Poverty is a condition wherein a
person is bereft of even the basic necessities of life and finds it extremely difficult
to sustain himself. Unemployment, on the other hand, is a situation where a person
willing to work cannot find work for himself. Unemployment breeds poverty as no
work means no income, which eventually leads to poverty. Even after 60 years of
independence, India has not been able to do away with the problem of poverty and
unemployment. According to a report by World Bank, 456 million Indians are still
under the Global Poverty Line i.e., they are surviving on an income of less than
one dollar a day. Nearly twenty-six percent of India’s population lives below the
poverty line. Similarly, about thirty-one percent Indians are unemployed.
India is considered to be a developing country; however, this development is not
inclusive as a large portion of its population is still struggling for survival.
Considering that a numner of MNCs are are entering the Indian market, the
country provides for huge employment opportunities. However, owing to large
population, the jobs generated by these MNCs do not cater to vast job
requirements. The Government has launched various poverty alleviation
programmes, but most of these have miserably failed in achieving their objective
because of official bottlenecks and misappropriation of funds. Nonetheless, the
success of programmes such as NREGA gives some hope that things could
improve in the future if proper implementation is guaranteed.
It is essential for the government to adopt effective measures to control the
problems of poverty and unemployment in the country. It must be ensured that
these two problems are the focus of all five-year plans. Development should not be
confined to a small section of society. It should percolate down to the lowest levels
in order to realize the dream of a developed India that can boast of inclusive
growth.
